E no Lado Americano, temos:

  1. F.E.A.R.
  2. Alone in the Dark
  3. Cold Fear
  4. Jericho

Alone in the Dark é um clássico, o precursor do Survival Horror.

E no Lado Japonês, temos:

  1. Resident Evil
  2. Silent Hill
  3. Fatal Frame
  4. Parasite Evil

Solve hidden object puzzles, beat mini-games and chat with Moxxie’s dense but good-natured pals as you work your way from one vibrantly animated scene to the next!

Puzzle 86 (Slitherlink) [All Threes]

This is a Slitherlink puzzle, with a twist. Every 3 in the puzzle is given to you. That is, if the solution has three segments around a single grid square, there is a 3 in that square.

Puzzle 86

I dare someone to make a normal slitherlink puzzle with this clue layout. Without doing something like adjacent 0s, I think it’s impossible. That should be the first sign these rules are a bit more interesting than they might appear to be at first. (At least, I was surprised.)

On that note, I apologize in advance for the fact that the solution is identical in some places on each side of the puzzle; the clue layout was a heavy constraint.

Temperate Tempests

Successful relationships and their progression can be divided into two conceptual categories:

A Temperate Relationship

A Tempestuous Relationship

In the beginning of a relationship, there is phase 1: interest. There will be a base level of attraction based largely on looks, for men. On the other hand, it is more complicated and multi-factorial with women. It is based on a mixture of superficial psychosocial cues, including symbols of status combined with looks and body language. Then, there is phase 2: escalation. Phase 2 is usually slower in a relationship that is more temperate in nature. This attraction grows, as gradually more intimate actions are taken based on the feelings they have; they discover more about the holistic person (how they kiss, do they complement your personality and beliefs?)  and fall in love — or love as they define it for themselves — based on this.

Feelings elicited through phase 2 and falling in love can be incredibly addictive to some. These types, amazingly, go through serial relationships, abandoning a relationship when it falls below the ‘love’ threshold. Avoid these types at all costs.

There is evidence to indicate love in itself is a primary motivator of human behaviour. For a lucky 10% of couples, MRI studies have shown that their relationship stays above the ‘love’ line, perhaps at the very same levels of the peak reached. I don’t show any skepticism about this as I’ve seen anecdotal evidence in many couples.  It seems more likely in relationships that are more temperate in basic nature, although it is more complicated than that.

The GirlGraphs above can be deceptive. ‘Relationship’ seems to imply that both are experiencing the same thing. However, a relationship is the sum of its parts. There can be a partner who has a more tempestuous predisposition and a partner who has a temperate one.

Men are more likely to be predisposed to temperate models. This is not because they do not become very passionate: they can and do. The problem is that it is much more damaging if a  man loses control: to put it in evolutionary terms, his anger wreaks unnecessary and costly damage and his fear or vulnerability makes him lose any battles he is challenged to. An uncontrolled emotion compromises his judgment. The emotions are there but they are more likely to be under control, and whether they become translated to actions is dependent on processes and deliberation.

As well as this, attraction to a woman by a man is much more likely to be influenced by long-term factors such as her looks and the general image of her general personality. There is less variation based on her actual behaviour; men in general seem to take a long time to react when a woman’s behaviour toward them deteriorates.

Women, conversely, are more likely to be predisposed to tempestuous models. She responds to social settings and his behaviour and her immediate surroundings: she analyses, deeply, short-term situations. Her hormone levels are prone to more fluctuation, influencing this further. She is more likely to feel reliant on him or dependent in some way. So she  may be reacting strongly to his behaviour: whether he is being supplicating, a jerk, sexy or loving. Her feeling — which she may or may not be consciously aware of — that his behaviour determines the happiness of her destiny makes her much more likely to reward, enthusiastically return his gestures, analyse, abruptly withdraw, criticise or punish him.

This results in mood swings that can be found utterly confusing by a clueless male. On the other hand, even if he is clued up, he can view them as childish or not to be tolerated.

A man who has good Game exploits and induces these mood swings in a high-risk*, high-return strategy.
*(subject to argument: it feels high risk. A woman has to believe he is a valuable person who has some legitimate claim of superiority over her in order for this to work. Therefore an educated risk if you understand the social situation.)

A woman who has good Game uses and redirects her feelings positively in the relationship. She uses them to build it up: to connect with her partner through being vulnerable to him. As well as this, she embraces high emotional states even when they are negative to connect with her partner physically, as well. Her glass is half-full. She recognises that her emotional state is usually complicated and that she has a degree of choice over which emotion can dominate her reactions and actions.

At more subtle and intricate levels beyond the general gender predispositions are the complexities of different personalities and the wider cultural, legal and spiritual context that birthed them.  Compounding the difficulty of analysing this via observation is that relationships can appear superficially different from the way they actually are due to these. Behaviour including language and gender conventions of any given couple can make them appear tempestuous when they are in fact temperate and vice versa.

However what can be said is that those who are more influenced by thoughts that are cereberal in nature and whom have good impulse control are more likely to strike a balance that errs on the side of temperate.

Now let us examine how wrong these relationship concepts can go:

Temperate Winter

It is rare for those in temperate relationships to reach a point where they reach their threshold of tolerance without breaking up. It can happen in those who feel strongly duty bound or socially forced to remain together. The risk in this situation is that there is a constant underlying desire of getting rid of the other half, manifesting in many passive manouvres against each other. The worst case scenario may manifest itself in homicide or suicide: extreme and irrational ways of escaping an intolerable situation due to recurrent fantasies of escape.

Although there is a general allergy to divorce, it — or at least the state of separation — is indeed needed in enough cases. People are people: they make mistakes about who they’re with or how they treat them, they change their minds, they change themselves and they stop getting along completely. This is all especially true in a climate that increases the threshold at which tolerance is placed; people lose their ability to be content with what they have or make it work and believe they can move on easily enough. On the one hand, divorce especially when children are involved should not be encouraged. On the other hand, remaining in the company of an incompatible person beyond the threshold of tolerance can be very pathological. Therefore, the ideal situation is that divorces are rarely occurring but occur on a fair basis without real acrimony if they do; a man keeps what he has earned himself and so does a woman. They have equal rights over their children and bad parenting should be corrected and discouraged in either gender. This places shared parenting as the point from which custody is approached; not the default as the mother. If there was a priority list of what to change, then unfair and gender-biased expensive divorce procedures would be at the top of it.

Raging Tempests

There is so much fluctuation in tempestuous relationships. This can be incompatible with sanity and stability, leading to a more bipolar pattern in contrast to the gradual, hopeless and inevitable decline in which a temperate relationship breaks down. If tempestuousness when pathological is correlated with poor impulse control, then it is more likely a partner committing an act such as — for example, cheating — which would warrant a response that can be reactively dramatic. These relationships are those that are ‘on’ again, ‘off’ again and involve many oscillations between heartbreak and euphoria. The course of action any individual in it can take is sudden and unexpected.

Conclusions

Those who are predisposed to being temperate can dismiss a tempestuous model as not valid.

Those with tempestuous natures can dismiss a temperate novel as invalid: ‘where is the passion?’ is the cry you hear.

It is a matter of personalities: different people love differently and either way they do, there is no guarantee of it lasting successfully.

A woman who has good Game understands when she is not ready for a relationship. She understands and reads her own emotions and what they mean. She has self-awareness. She knows where her limits are: when her feelings are too weak to make a success out of a relationship or too unstable to enjoy one without subjecting herself to dangerous lows and highs: both states in which she has not sufficiently schooled herself and her emotions. She could do anything, anything at all, then.

Most relationships require some combination of temperate sunshine and fiery tempests. Make sure you have a healthy, appropriate helping of each. Imagery of mother nature is effective in describing a woman: you are a river. You offer him the rapids he feels alive knowing how to navigate. When he completes his journey, you offer him sanctuary and a home, hidden exclusively for him behind waterfalls. He feels no man has found this place, nor could any man find it after him.

knytt Stories

Knytt Stories is an independant game created by game designer Niflas, with a simple but fairly powerful program called The Games Factory. I played this game a while ago and recently revisited it, only now realizing how enamored I am with it. If you’ve every played a Metroid game, you’ll be instantly familiar with the style of gameplay: You explore vast areas, and find new items which let you progress deeper into the world. However, Knytt only uses this style as a baseline, throwing in it’s own twists.

Welcome to Knytt

For starters, there’s no combat in the game; No fighting whatsoever. This takes the emphasis off of battling foes, and places it on platforming and exploration. This is an enormous strength, and adds greatly to the atmosphere, which I’ll get into later. Even though there are no fights in the game, that doesn’t mean there aren’t enemies. The only way that you can deal with enemies is to find unique was of getting past them, rather than blasting your way through. I found this to be a great way of keeping a sense of conflict and light challenge in the game without taking the focus off of exploration. There is a very large variety of baddies in the game, so each time you face one it’s a new and exiting challenge. They never get too difficult though. The only real problem with the enemies is that they can resemble the ambient creatures (snails, slugs) very closely, so that it becomes possible to confuse the dangerous foes from the friendly animals. Thankfully, it never becomes too big of an issue.

This enemy jumps every time you do, making for an interesting challange

So, there are enemies in the game, but the heart of Knytt Stories is the exploration. You are thrust into a strange world, and left to wander the mysterious land with no map or real sense of direction. This sets up the mood of the game, which I find to be one of the best traits (if not the best trait) of the game. The real star of the show is the striking visual style, complemented by an outstanding ambient soundtrack. The graphics in the game are composed entirely of pixel art, and it suits the game well. The backgrounds are amazingly detailed, and differ greatly creating a sense of progression. Just the sheer number of different environment is one of the most impressive parts, epically considering that Knytt is a single open world, not multiple levels. Each new area is as or more beautiful than the last. Even though the backgrounds change frequently, the style remains constant (foreground objects are all outlined in black for example) throughout the game. The music is just as mysterious as the world itself, and does a great job of providing the mood. Here’s a sample of the music in Knytt Stories if you care to listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AU0C_l1H904.

The art direction is fantastic

There are many differnt background themes within the world of Knytt

So, under the amazing visuals and great music there actually is a game, believe it or not. There are a number of items to collect in Knytt Stories, including objects that make you jump higher, glide, climb and more. You progress through the game by finding these items, and use their powers to lead to to previously inexpressible areas. The game does a great job of making this old concept feel fresh. First of all, even though the world is enormous, you never receive a map. This might seem like it would only confuse things, but it actually lifts what would otherwise be a burden on the player. You are always headed somewhere, and if you come across a fork in the road, you pick a direction; Everything leads to somewhere. The design is set up very well, and as a result you nearly always feel like you know where to head next, even though there is no clear indication of where to go. This gameplay element keeps the focus on moving forward, and as a result you are never just wandering around or lost.

There's always something to do, or somewhere to go

The challenge in this game is very light, mainly because of the constant checkpoints. Every couple of screens there is an area where you can instantaneously save and keep pressing forward. I’ve found that this does two things. It keeps the game free of frustration, which is great, but also just creates a more relaxed experience. This is not a game that’ll make you sweat; this a game that you go through slowly and absorb. There is challenge, but it never gets to a very extreme level, and there is no punishment for dying. The main way that the game challenges you is with light platforming segments. This keeps you from “zoning out” and makes you pay attention without getting frustrated. You also get a great sense of accomplishment when you are able to breeze through previous challenges because of new items.

This is an interesting platform challange, but it becomes much easier on the way back when you have the double jump

Knytt stories is an original and atmospheric game that should not be ignored just because it doesn’t have enough content to be a full retail game. It’s fun, pretty, and well designed. What more do you want? There is also downloadable content to keep you satisfied for a long time, or if you want to return to it after a while like I did. Oh, and a level editor to create and share your own Knytt creations. Oh, right, and its free. So, what are you waiting for, go download this game already.

R4 ds karte

World is growing and so is it’s demand for technology. Right now the madness for games is at the peak and as we can see and it is very hard to predict the future demand for it. Buying any r4 ds karte is pretty simple and easy. Purchasing The R4 is not a problem at all. We can get it from online stores or can buy it from a local store. Buying any R4 DS karte is pretty simple and easy. World is growing and so is it’s demand for technology.

Presently the R4 DS appears to be the most popular NDS card at this stage, the R4DS will totaly open your Nintendo DS console. You can view movies, store hundreds of games all on this small but powerful Nintendo DS flash card. The R4 DS is just an amazing little device with lots of ability and which is of the same size as the original NDS cart, the R4 DS karte is a total solution for gaming with no need to purchase any extra components and has become the easiest to use media enhancer out in the market. Originally r4 karte were manufactured by the r4 karte team, who manufactured the first ever Nintendo DS R4 card in 2007. The R4 karte is in existence since then, but recently due to some game compatibility issues it is facinf a down fall.

Physically or hardware wise, the quality of the R4DS revolution is top class, the feature you can remove the micro SD from the R4 DS without unmounting the whole card from the NDS slot is awesome. After thousands of these great little cards in the market, it is quite a good thing to know that a handful of these cards that became faulty, most faults were DOA and very few have ever been returned after being used. The outer casing of R4 is made of very strong plastic and is really a protective casing and not just mere a cheap plastic case that really has no durability.

The R4DS Cartridge is in the peak in the DS SLOT-1 flash carts. It is just an wonderful little device same to as original DS cart size, it provides a complete solution with no need to purchase any additional components or you have to puzzle yourself with software and proved to be good media player. And there she is!

Everyone, give a warm welcome to Fibia! The ignorant woods spirit!

She took longer than I’d thought. Especially the hair. Still a few things not done. The feet for one, I’m still waiting for the magnets to arrive. And I want to add more colors to the dress, and more flaps. Everything has got wires in it, so it can move Even the skirt. Yay for secondary action!

She’s pretty small, fits in my hand.

Bears 1st Quarter Thoughts

Cutler's awesome helicopter TD run

After last Sunday’s Redzone meltdown against the Atlanta Falcons, the Chicago Bears hope to go on the road and get a win against the Cincinnati Bengals. With the season more than a quarter of the way finished, the glaring problems of the Chicago Bears are becoming obvious. One of the problems is that the Bears can not run the ball, and it is not all of Matt Forte’s fault either. After a very good rookie season, Forte is struggling to get yards but the difference between this year and last year is the offensive line. The Bears O-line is just not run-blocking very well. My pre-season observations led me to believe the Bears O-line would struggle protecting Jay Cutler but instead the O-line is struggling to get any push in the run game. An indication that the offensive line is to blame rather than Forte is that opposing teams have been hitting Forte in the back field (that’s my personal observation). Running lanes have been scarce so far. The biggest problem – and unfortunately one that is out the Bears control – is the injury bug that has hit the Bears. The linebackers corps has been hit the hardest but the defensive tackles have been injured as well. Last week in the fourth quarter of the Atlanta game, Pisa Tinoisamoa suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee. The linebackers unit has already missed star MLB Brian Urlacher (out for the season) and all the other Bears linebackers except Lance Briggs have been injured at some point of the season and missed time (that includes pre-season and regular season). The latest high-profile Bear to be injured is Tommie Harris, who will not suit up for Sunday’s game. Israel Idonije has already missed time but did come back to play last week against Atlanta.

Are these problems worrisome for Bears fans? Surprisingly not yet. The Bears have been competitive in every game so far, but football adage says that the great teams win the close games. The Bears are 2-2 in their close games and 1-2 on the road. Not bad for a pretty tough starting season schedule. Despite the injuries to the defense, the unit has hung in there with good play from the fill-in linebackers of Roach, Williams, and Hillenmeyer. ‘Peanut’ Tillman has played very well, and Briggs is playing like Briggs – which is always good. Yes, there have been some defensive lapses here and there (evident last week when the Bears struggled with the no-huddle). Hopefully, the injuries are over as the unit can not afford anymore losses as then it would become worrisome (thankfully, the Bears are deep at both the linebackers and D-line). As for the O-line run-blocking I just can’t see the Bears turning on the switch permanently, but now would be the time to do so as the Bears enter the “softer” part of their schedule. The Bears can not put it all on Cutler’s shoulders and that became clear last week when Cutler threw an interception in the redzone. Had a running game been established, that crucial INT might have not happened.

These are only two obvious problems, while there are a lot more positives for the Bears. For one, Jay Cutler has been pretty damn good, and while he has not been flashy he has been a big part of the reason the Bears have been competitive this year. Another positive is the play from the wide receivers this years. I’m not quite ready to jump on the Johnny Knox bandwagon just yet, but it is not hard to see he has been pretty special so far. While Devin Hester has not come up on the stat sheet as fans would like, he has done the ‘little things’ that has impressed me. Hester route running is pretty good not playing the position for too long, and I’ve seen him make some big time blocks that most receivers don’t make. Plus, Hester has made some pretty tough catches in traffic. Aside from the Green Bay bomb and Calvin Johnson nearly having a field day, the Bears secondary has been the third positive in the Bears early season. In pre-season I really thought teams would pick the secondary apart but they have not been as bad as I expected. Lastly, the special teams – specifically the punting of Maynard and the kicking of Gould – have been awesome. Maynard especially impressed me with his punts landing inside the 20 yard line. Hey, its not pretty but field position goes a long way.

Orsenigo 1 - 1 Marte

24-10-2009 12:55

Street Fighter IV

Ressucitando outro post antigo.

Game Character Design: WIP

I drew this bad ass girl with an Uzi last night after giving up on my Zombie special forces soldier. I think she’s better because the face turned out rather nicely since i based it off Natalie Portman but with larger more crazed eyes because she’s supposed to be not completely all there.

This is all part of a 2 month long project for Tom’s class where we’re creating character concept art, then modeling are characters in Zbrush and finally making game model’s out of the high rez sculpts. As far as the concept art goes i am done not because it’s complete but because the deadline is up. I also don’t really have a  back story or name for her yet but i will probably come up with something soon even though it’s not necessary for this assignment but i figure it would be fun.

On a side note i should probably learn how to paint better…

Spiritual successor

Remember how I scoffed at the special edition of New Super Mario Bros Wii? Well along comes The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks with it’s preorder bonus, restoring my faith in the obligatory sales gimmick that is special editions. Ok, so it may just be a fancy tin much like NSMBW but it also includes some all important figurines for us to stand proudly upon our mantlepiece, game’s shelf or indeed left in the tin for safe keeping. At the moment it’s only available at Gamestation for £39.99 but bigger brother GAME told CVG that it will also be sold for £29.99 at GAME itself from 26th October. An odd turn of events seeing as they’re basically the same company but I for one am holding out until then with the hope of bagging myself some more useless video game merchandise, adding to an every growing pile of shame.

“What’s so great about Assassin’s Creed is that we can just expand and expand.”

“So maybe in this context you were a woman in England during WWII. Why not? Nothing prevents us from doing it.”

Cinemassacre's Monster Madness looks at An American Werewolf in London

A movie that needs no introduction for anyone in the TF community. It’s impossible to do the film justice in only 3 minutes, but it’s a good look at the film and the status of werewolf movies in general.

Also, be sure to check out his look at The Fly series from earlier this week while you’re there.

Pre-Build 2 Checklist

Woah, already! Yes. Build 2, time to get underway. Lets get this game as fun as we can, as quick as we can.

BUILD 2 CHECKLIST

Items colored Green are done, Items colored Red have yet to be done. Notice how much shorter this is than the first checklist – that’s because the basic engine’s all done (for battles, at least!).

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

Calvary – Calvary are the concepts of special units that can be mounted and unmounted. The unit that mounts them will be able to move using the AP of the mount, but attack using its own AP.

Spells and Skills - After some deliberation, we have decided that spells and skills will use variable setting instead of custom code (except for some special spells, like summoning and mauran sword-fighting and weapon enchanting, etc), however there will be optional custom code that can be run instead (but getting it to do anything you imagine will be pretty hard considering it’s just one line and getting it to loop properly in game would involve using event creation functions, which are very annoying). These will be things like chucking a fireball at someone, striking them with lightening, doing a power chop, etc. Magical weapons will be able to add and subtract skills from the player.

New HUD and control scheme – Instead of that giant clunky bar on the left side of your screen, the new HUD will be a small window that pops up when you select a unit. No more clicking Move or Attack to do what they indicate, now just click an empty piece of land to move the selected guy there. Attacking will work the same way – this makes less work for the player. The new HUD will give the stats of the selected unit and allow the player to select spells.

MiniMap – By popular demand, we’re adding in a little minimap to a corner of the screen. It’ll be adjustable, so you can click and drag it to make a minimap size of your choice!

Adjustable Resolution - People with 30″ monitors want to play in crazy imax mode without it getting choppy going to fullscreen? We’ll have a custom resolution option in the settings that lets you see the screen at the size you want. Widescreen included!

Re-Done Collision - The only major glitch of the first build, we’ll be trying to re-do the collision system so people don’t get stuck on stuff/eachother.

AI improvements – One of the larger undertakings of this build, we’re making the ai better. Ai will be modular in the respect that units from any team can be set to AI, and units from your team can be easily grouped into formations and be given orders as a whole such as attacks on the side of an enemy formation, holding a position, etc.

General Battle System Revamping – There will be multiple teams available and we’ll make the AI compatible -  so now we should be able to do 3v3 and 4v4, 1v2 etc. battles. Not to mention that any of them can be set to players or AI, so you can make a cool screensaver with the AI fighting people or play your friends in hotseat!

Speed Bonuses – Like the angle bonus seen in build 1, units that moved the most towards their enemy since the last turn will do more damage. Now cavalry charges can kick some serious butt – speed bonuses from the huge 800 AP (estimate) move of the horse go into the attack from the rider as he flies past.

Ranged Weapon Revamp - Mainly for the mod community, ranged weapons files will be able to specify multiple shots at once, rapid-fire shots, effect generation (shell casings, muzzle flashes, etc).

GFX Revamp – Even though the online community was split between the game looking good and looking bad, I personally agree with the “looking bad” people. It is partly because I’m sort of a perfectionist on the look of my games (but I don’t usually end up doing much about the look, I always just know it could look better) – We’re going to standardize and fix the graphics. Right now, soldiers and items are pixelled, where the landscape is done in photoshop. We’re going to make everything pixelled so the game looks better in a stylistic approach, even though it will take way longer to pixel everything (especially those trees, oh no!)

-and that’s it for now. If we come up with something, we’ll add more. Feel free to suggest! Remember, build 2 is only going to be the COMPLETED battle system – no world map and inventory stuff yet.

IPO Market Showing Concern (MG, TLCR, BSBR, EM, CLNY, RA, FIG, ARI, VITC, ECHO, CPC, GAME, SNDA, CYOU, SOHU, CPIX, OMER, BX)

It was just in August that practically every single initial public offering was trading above its IPO price.  The market had rallied significantly, and still rallied after that to just this week have a 10,000 handle on the DJIA.  Investors started warming to more risk-based capital, and investment bankers were finally able to get deals done.  Even waves and waves of secondary offerings were able to be absorbed merely by brokers being able to tell clients they could buy stock at an implied discount to the average price over the few days before.  But suddenly, the IPO market has turned out some real dogs with fleas.

Mistra Group (NYSE: MG) priced its offering at $12.50 on October 7.  While it traded as low as $12.17, it has escaped the hangman’s file of ‘busted deals’ as it is now a $13.51 stock.  The one thing that may have helped was that it priced under an initial range of $14 to $16 per share.  Talecris Biotherapeutics Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: TLCR) also went into the busted category temporarily after hitting a low of $18.01 after a $19.00 pricing.  Fortunately, it is up at $19.97 so is also now out of the hangman’s eyes.  Still, an 8% gain and a 5% gain in this market might leave some investors feeling lonely.  Banco Santander Brasil S.A. (NYSE: BSBR) was a very large IPO of over 500 million shares at an implied $13.40, and this one got out of the “busted IPO” dungeon on Thursday and closed at $13.51 on Friday.  Before Thursday it had spent its 6 prior trading sessions as a busted IPO.

Emdeon Inc. (NYSE: EM) had traded above $18.00 briefly after its IPO priced at $15.50 in August. But now the healthcare revenue and payment cycle management solutions provider, which is supposed to be a healthcare winner ahead, closed down at $15.35 on Friday  and had been slightly lower during the week.  This was effectively a re-IPO as Emdeon had been public before after General Atlantic Partners acquired it and it also received an investment from Hellman & Friedman. It also has ties to James Clark, the Netscape founder and was part of Healtheon.

Colony Financial Inc. (NASDAQ: CLNY) came public late in September at $20.00 per share, and it closed down at $19.69 Friday and has traded as low as $19.25.  Interestingly enough, Friday’s $19.68 close looks to be the highest price since the IPO date.   Colony is a newly formed real estate finance company (mortgage REIT) that will focus primarily on acquiring, originating and managing commercial mortgage loans, which may be performing, sub-performing or non-performing loans, other commercial real estate-related debt investments, CMBS, REO properties and other real estate-related assets.

RailAmerica Inc. (NYSE: RA) has been a busted deal after this was brought public in a re-IPO by Fortress Investment Group LLC (NYSE: FIG) after going private in February 2007.  This short line and regional freight railroad operator came public at $15.00 per share on October 12, so it hardly has much trading behind it.  But its absolute highest print this last week was $14.78 and it closed on Friday at $14.26 for a 5% loser.

Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance, Inc. (NYSE: ARI) came public at $20.00 on September 24.  This comes out of Apollo Global Management, LLC and it intends to originate and acquire senior performing commercial real estate mortgage loans, commercial real estate corporate debt and loans and to purchase legacy and newly originated investment grade CMBS, and other performing real estate debt investments.  The highest price this one has seen since the IPO was $19.20, and it closed down at $18.57 on Friday to make the tally come to a 7% loser.

Then comes Vitacost.com Inc. (NASDAQ: VITC), which operates as an online retailer of various nutritional supplements, and health and wellness products.  Its September 24 IPO priced at $12.00 yet has been very volatile in not so much of a good way.  It has traded above the $12.00 mark at $12.25 during the first week, but then shares went as low as $9.34 and closed on Friday at $10.75 for still more than a 10% discount to its IPO price.

There are other 10% and higher losers as well.  Echo Global Logistics, Inc. (NASDAQ: ECHO), which provides business process outsourcing serving the transportation and logistics needs, came public at $14.00 on October 2, and while it did briefly hit $14.23 it closed down at $12.50 on Friday for a loss of 10.7%.

Chemspec International Limited (NYSE: CPC) was brought public in June at $9.00.  This Chinese chemical compounds company has traded as high as $10.50 and as low as $6.63.  Its closing price of $7.79 on Friday gives it a loss of over 13%.

Shanda Games Limited (NASDAQ: GAME) has all the earmarks of a forced copy-cat IPO.  Since it is out of China and a copy-cat strategy, we’ll even call it a knock-off IPO.  This was a Shanda Interactive Entertainment Ltd. (NASDAQ: SNDA) ’spin-off’ that is technically still under control of the parent and by the IPO prospectus will remain that way.  The inspiration for this was this the successful Changyou.com  (NASDAQ: CYOU) spin-off IPO from Sohu.com (NASDAQ: SOHU), which had effectively doubled when Shanda decided a knock-off strategy.  Shanda Games came public at $12.50 on September 25 and briefly hit $13.00.  Yet it also went under $10.00 and closed Friday at $10.32 to come to a 17.4% loser.

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPIX) came public at $17.00 per share and its $75.2 million was to be used for potential acquisitions, the pending launch of the Company’s Caldolor(®) product for pain and fever, expansion of the Company’s hospital sales force, product development, debt repayment and general corporate purposes.  It also markets Acetadote(®) for the treatment of acetaminophen poisoning and Kristalose(®), a prescription strength laxative.  It turns out that IPO investors felt like they got too much of that powerful laxative.  This did go as high as $17.75, but then the blow-holes opened up despite 3 broker as issuing buy ratings.  Shares have gone under $13 and closed Friday at $13.40 for a loser by over 21%.  This one has some revenues and has been profitable.

Lastly, there is Omeros Corporation (NASDAQ: OMER).  This is a biotech play as a clinical-stage company committed to discovering, developing and commercializing products focused on inflammation and disorders of the central nervous system.  It came public at $10.00, already at the bottom of the $10 to $12 per share range, and its shares closed at $6.88 Friday to account for a whopping 31.2% loss for IPO buyers.  No one who bought this has made money as its highest post-IPO price looks to be $9.49.

The Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX) is weighing as many as eight IPOs or target-acquisition exits in the coming months according to multiple reports.  If it wants a smooth exit, it better consider making the deals as good for new IPO buyers as it is for Blackstone.  KKR wants to bring back the giant Dollar General as a public company despite the thought that the dollar-store investment play may have already seen its best days during the recession.

As Gordon Gecko would say, there are many dogs with fleas.  Some will do well in the future, but investors were just too shell-shocked from late 2008 into the first quarter of 2009 to buy up other peoples’ mess.  Investors feel little need to support a private equity-backed IPO where all the proceeds are going straight back to the private equity firms.  Companies that are unprofitable also have less appeal to investors.  And complicated structures also offer conservative investors much comfort.

Puzzle 72 (Slalom)

This is a Slalom puzzle.

Puzzle 72

It’s very hard to make these puzzles in a way that’s unassailable by metalogic. I know I’m not alone; the puzzles nikoli put out that I mentioned in the last post had some obvious ways of being utterly destroyed by it. I’ll have to stick with the already-mentioned reminder that you’re only cheating yourself of the puzzle’s entertainment by employing it.

Swift + Lautner = Taylor Squared?

It’s a match made in teenage heartthrob heaven: Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner!

OK, so nothing is official — at least not yet. But there is plenty of ammo making folks wonder if the two Taylors are more than just friends.

The pair filmed a scene for the upcoming, all-star-casted Valentine’s Day and pictures leaked in July of the duo locking lips on the set (for the movie, natch). Over the weekend, the country-singing Swift performed at a concert in Chicago. The Twilight-starring Lautner showed up to the show and gave Swift a hug after her serenade, much to the approval of screaming female fans.

After Lautner intently watched Swift perform, we wondered if the two Taylors are creeping around together. We think that they should just declare their teenage love for each other and become a couple by 12/5. Nearly 58% of voting Predicto Mobile members agree.

See what Predicto Mobile members had to say about this potentially new couple.

Flashgameempfehlung ,,I Don't Even Know"

,,I Don’t Even Know”

Schade eigentlich.

Grüße, Martin²

Dealing with AMOG's

I was reading Roissy’s post over at The Spearhead, and discussing the AMOG situation with my boyfriend.

I told him about the current comment war (how some guys were saying, “just hit the guy,” and others were saying “hitting the guy will totally lose you status”), and explained my stance on the subject, which was that a lot of AMOG-types are the super-charismatic, likeable types, and so just decking the guy would probably not win you points.

Boyfriend disagreed, thinks decking guy would be totally acceptable.  I then explained that the only reason the boyfriend thinks this is because the boyfriend a) knows how to pick his fights, and b) doesn’t have to worry about getting beaten up.  Boyfriend rolled his eyes and posted anyway.  So, guys, before you take my boyfriend’s well-meaning (and, it totally is) advice, please be aware of the difference between him and Roissy:

If you are some NFL linebacker or otherwise high-T neanderthal type, you may take the boyfriend approach any day of the week, with no repercussions other than hot, sexy sex.  Otherwise, do yourself a favor and follow Roissy’s.

Perfect Cherry Blossom ~ Normal 1cc!

Figures after I put up my whine post I go and 1cc pcb a few days later ^^;;

You may have noticed I added another top level page – 東方プロジェクト (touhou project).  It’s just a list of all the “regular” touhou games and my progress through each.  By regular, I just mean the touhou games that got an integer number, i.e. th6, th7, etc. through th12 but not including th7.5, 9.5 etc.  (though I am curious why potfv was given a regular integer number since it’s not much like the games before or after it).  Once I get my hands on the other games, I’ll add ‘em to the list.

Kinda sucks that my run was ~32 minutes long.  Didn’t divide up into youtubable chunks nicely at all.  Ended up with stages 1 & 2 in the first vid, then each stage after that having to go to a separate segment.

Been practicing stages 4, 5 and 6 almost daily, yet I put out one of my worst performances on each -_-

My yuyuko fight was particularly bad, where i fail to capture a single card.  (for non-touhou’ers, the ‘cards’ are the special attacks that follow when you see the character portrait appear on the screen.  to ‘capture’ you must survive without dying or bombing)

Think I’m going to try and repeat the miracle with a regular 3 life clear then move on to IN.  My extra stage queue is building but I get brutalized so bad I think I’m gonna wait for the IN extra (IN features a spell card practice mode) before making a serious attempt.

Relieved to get this one under my belt!  2 down, 5 to go!

Suing Dr. Phil

Dr. Phil is being sued for imprisonment, groping and brainwashing. Surprisingly, none of these charges stem from enduring his daily talk show (can it be called “talk” when it’s more of a one-way lecture? OK, we digress.).

A former patient of Dr. Phil McGraw claims that during her visitations she was held captive (in some circumstances with a naked man — not Dr. Phil); deprived of sleep and food; and “subjected to edited tapings depicting her as a different personality other than her own.” She even says that McGraw touch her left breast during one of these therapy sessions.

Harsh allegations, though the woman is no stranger to big-number lawsuits, having made multiple claims for large figures in the past decade. But is she on to something in her papers against Dr. Phil? And will he try to settle the case to keep her quiet?

The Predicto Mobile community has spoken, with nearly 59% speculating that Dr. Phil will settle this case by 11/25.

See what users had to say about the controversial doctor!

Gosselin vs. Grace: Round 2?

Poor Jon Gosselin. Not only has he dealt with the written tongue-lashing via the celebrity gossip magazines and blogs, but now he’s starting to get thrashed on TV, too.

The reality TV dad — who’s best known as the pushover on Jon & Kate Plus 8 — has had his fair share of off-camera antics such as dating younger women, depleting a joint bank account he shares with his wife and attending pool parties in Vegas.

Because of this, everyone seems to be questioning why he’s now threatening to cancel production of the show. Though his children are older and used to the filming, Gosselin claims the show is bad for his children, mostly because he and his soon-to-be-ex-wife are veering toward divorce. As such, he doesn’t want his twins and sextuplets to be on the show anymore. (FYI, TLC sort of let him go by changing the name of the show to Kate Plus 8. Perhaps he was angry that he was angry that the checks would stop coming in?)

All of this was fuel for the fire known as Nancy Grace, the hard-hitting TV personality whose shows revolve around justice and the court system. When the two sat on a panel on The Insider this week, the two traded jabs. Let’s be honest, Grace destroyed the blank-faced Gosselin, as she questioned his romps with his seemingly endless number of girlfriends and contradictory parenting skills.

After a touching meeting, will Gosselin show up as a guest on Grace’s HLN show? 55% of voting Predicto Mobile community members think Jon will go back for a second helping of hurt from the talk show host.

“He loves the spotlight and if there’s money, then he will not think twice,” says “helj5500.”

“I don’t care for Nancy Grace or Jon Gosselin, and I don’t think he wants to face the critics. He wants everyone to think he’s hen-pecked,” says member “LuvsaKnight.”

“Would you go on her show after she ripped you?” asks “Mr.Mouse169.”

Puzzle 61 (Out of Sight)

This is an Out of Sight puzzle.

Puzzle 61

I’m guessing one reason nikoli makes Hitori the way they do is to discourage the use of metalogic (using the fact there is a unique solution), which can still be pretty effective but far more cumbersome than in a puzzle type like this. I guess I can’t stop you from using it, but you’re only depriving yourself of the puzzle’s creativity by doing so.

Maybe I should offer prizes for finding errors in my puzzles or something. That would be quite a negative incentive to use metalogic.

Quirk is er klaar voor

Kom maar op met die herfst. Ik ben er helemaal klaar voor. Ik heb entertainment:

Ik heb eten:

Ja dat ziet u goed: karamelkruidnoten. Ze verzinnen elk jaar weer wat nieuws. Ik zag ook al gekleurde chocolade kruidnoten. Net reuze m&m’s.

Bedankt Meisjes!

Quality Vs Quantity in Video Games

Video games are one of, Game, the most popular forms of entertainment, now rivaling the film and music industries. Compared to movies and music, video games are much more expensive, Game, per purchase, Game, . On iTunes a typical album goes for about $10 and DVD movies generally are under $30. Meanwhile full retail games usually go for $60 on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 ($50 for PC and Wii). The current economic downturn has hurt most businesses worldwide, and video games are no exception. Game sales are down substantially from just a couple of years ago and many companies are being forced to lay-off workers and whole development teams. For consumers it is more important than ever to choose games that are a good value. Determining what exactly makes a game a good value is a difficult question, Game, to answer, as proven by the drastic difference in sales from one game to another.A lower cost is a sure, Game, way to increase value. Digital distribution does allow for this as publishers do not have to charge for the cost of shipping a game to stores. Every major current gaming platform (PC, 360, PS3, Wii, DS, and PSP) allows in some capacity for digitally downloaded games, Game, . The newly announced PSP Go will only allow for downloadable games. This is certainly a good trend but it is not quite the solution, at least not yet. For starters,, Game, the vast majority of games are still purchased at retail. There are a few reasons for this. Console manufacturers are just, Game, starting to integrate fully featured games into their download, Game, services and so most of the major titles cannot be purchased this way. Console gamers will also need an adjustment period to get used to the concept so even as more games become available through Xbox Live or PlayStation Network, there will still be a period of time that retail purchases outsell their downloadable counterparts. Secondly, there has yet to be a noticeable cut in price for buying the downloadable releases. Buying a new release on the Steam download service for PC generally saves, Game, a couple dollars, but isn’t the drastic cut that was expected. Also, games designed with the downloadable market are still generally less fleshed, Game, out than standard releases. Battlefield, Game, 1943 for example is a download-only game recently released that has the same style gameplay as the retail versions in the series such, Game, as Battlefield 2 or Battlefield 2142. However, it only has 4 multiplayer maps and 3 classes to use. This is far fewer than the previous entries. So even if Battlefield 1943 is cheaper, it is cheaper because there is less content. So for the most part, price will not be the determining factor of games just yet. They are usually the same price as competing games. In that case it comes down to the game itself when looking at value. Some games offer tremendous amounts of content. Supreme Commander takes about 30 hours to complete, The Orange Box could take even more to finish all of the included games, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion could, Game, last for over 100 hours if a player chose to see all it has to offer. Then there are multiplayer focused games that could provide an infinite, Game, amount of replayability, Game, . Call of Duty 4 has gotten over 100 hours of online play from certain people and World of Warcraft has so much to it that Blizzard charges $15 per month to play it and still sees millions of users play for years. On the flip side, Call of, Game, Duty 4 takes under 10 hours to, Game, plow through its excellent, but brief single player campaign. The God of War games are, Game, critically acclaimed but none of them are very long and do not provide any multiplayer gameplay either. This leads to the important question. What makes a game worth buying? If it is the number of hours to finish than role playing games such as Final Fantasy and Fallout 3 are surely at the top of the list. However, it is impossible to measure the hours required to finish a multiplayer game. Going back to Call of Duty 4, you can see all of the maps and modes in just a couple of hours, but some people keep coming back for more. The answer to the question will surely vary from person to person. For me the best value is a high-quality, high-content experience. I have currently played Oblivion for over 40 hours, have not finished it, and still enjoy playing, Game, it. That is undeniably good value. It gets harder to choose when it comes to games that are short but sweet and games that are long but mediocre.Braid, a downloadable game for Xbox Live Arcade and PC is a Super Mario-style platformer with a twist that your character can manipulate time to solve puzzles. I purchased this game and finished it after just 4 or 5 hours of play. The game even has a mode to try and beat in 45 minutes, acknowledging how short it really is. There is no multiplayer either and so I have not gone back to it after finishing it. That said, I absolutely loved the game. Everything from the unique gameplay, to the soundtrack,, Game, to the storyline fits really well together. The game costs money though, and I got far fewer hours of it than I did with other games.I have been told that Titan, Game, Quest for PC can take up to 40 hours to finish. While I appreciate the developers, Game, trying to extend the length of the game, I personally did not fall in love with the game. I put in about 5 or 6 hours into it and although there wasn’t anything, Game, particularly wrong with it, I ended up moving on to another game and never completed it. It might have the potential to be a worthwhile purchase, but I did not get as much out of it as I had hoped for the price I paid. This is the, Game, risk developers, Game, find with making their games longer. With a limited number of hours to play video games, I will not finish games that I find go on for a long time if I am not a huge fan of them. This decreases its value for me because I will never get to see the conclusion of the story or square off against the toughest boss enemies that the game has to offer. Is there a perfect sweet spot for games to reach, where they provide enough content without getting tedious midway through the game? Should all games have a minimum length, say 10 hours? 15 hours? Should shorter games be cheaper because of their length? Is it better for a game to be short and excellent or long and good, but not great? I don’t know if I can answer these questions but I would love to hear from anyone who has an opinion on the topic.

Oblivion: Roleplaying Guide Chapter 1 Part 5

Part 5 of my Oblivion Roleplaying Guide:

Middle Class

Ok, so now you are a prestigious member of the middle class. This is what you have been saving your money on. This, is the golden class, you can have 75% of the jobs you can think of. Obviously as a member of the middle class you can’t be like the counts and tax the poor and\or the rich for money, but we’ll get to that later. So you can be almost whoever you want to be, and chose whatever job fits your class. You want to be someone who buys lots of items and sells them at double price? Ok. You want to go and massacre entire legions of goblins? Ok. You want to become a prestigious escort for merchant cheapskates and goblin sterminators? Ok. You want to become a beggar that works for the watch that lives in a three story house and is actually the count of a far off city-state in the long lost land of Atmora surrounded by bloodthirsty extinct sload and mutated argonians? I don’t think so, well, you can, but it’s your roleplaying experience that’s being ruined. This chapter is a short one since there is not much to offer. You gain enough money so that you can go adventuring one and a while and do more quests, if you are a freelance merchant (“You want to be someone who buys lots of items and sells them at double price?”) all the better since you go adventuring to towns and that business!

Summary: Middle Class

Job: Blacksmith, Innkeeper, Merchant, Alchemist, Freelance Merchant

Money a Week:

Blacksmith: 280

Middle Class blacksmiths aren’t much richer than the middle class so you might want to go to the richest city (Skingrad) to sell your wares.

Innkeeper: 300

Innkeepers aren’t also much richer but you can also find the in the upper middle class so you should go to Skingrad also like for blacksmiths.

Merchant: 320

Alchemist: 350

Freelance Merchant: 280

The low income is because you can do more adventuring.
