Brutal Legend - Review (PS3)

After being impressed with the demo I was looking forward to playing Brutal Legend.

I like Jack Black and the music tracklist for the game looked great – Brutal Legend truly is a homage to the Metal genre.

The game tells the story of Eddie Riggs (Black), a roadie who finds himself in a mystical metal filled world and becomes embroiled in a battle to save it’s inhabitants.

I really enjoyed Brutal Legend, it’s mix of hack n slash and RTS (Real Time Strategy) didn’t quite do it for me but the story and voice acting carried me through it.

The main problem seems to be that the game couldn’t decide what it wanted to be – personally I found the driving, exploration and hack n slash sections to suit the music and story better than the RTS bits.

However that also may be because I’m relatively inexperienced with RTS games.

During the big RTS battles I’d often know what I was supposed to be doing but just couldn’t find the right combo of ’soldiers’ – even then most of the time the battle would just end with a victory without me having any idea what had triggered the win.

I guess this game might be a good way to find out if you might like the genre or not.

The universe created by Tim Schafer is a vivid one that evokes old album covers and even features Lemmy and Ozzy Osbourne as characters.

The world is fun to play around in and the mix of axe and guitar attacks make the game a giggle at times. In particular the ‘facemelter’ solo always brought a smile to my face.

Overall I think Brutal Legend suffers from the indecision of it’s creators, or perhaps the grand ideas they had for the game as a mix of genres that just didn’t come off.

It’s a shame as there is a good story and a great game world there to be explored but it’s hampered by the somewhat clumsy RTS parts.

Rating: 6/10

Family Game Night

Family Game Night

Family Game Night

Introduction: This game is a fun collection of some of Hasbro’s most classic board and dice games to date. Including Battleship, Boggle, Sorry, Sorry Sliders, Scrabble, and Yahtzee. This fun collection of games is a nice package for gamers and non-gamers of all ages to enjoy. Joined along side with Mr. Potatohead, Family Game Night looks to make your gaming console the life of the party.

Good: The most appealing part of this is that if you only like one of the games offered in the packaged game, you can always purchase as many or little as you wish online as separate transactions. This game is a complete blast to play with family and friends. With online support, even if you can’t gather a group of friends inside your living room, you can still have fun with the online community.

Not only do you have the standard play type of each game, but each game has it’s own set of special rules that can be tweaked to your exact preference. Want to add wild dice in Yahtzee? Or maybe add rotating letters in Boggle? The customizable options are a fun and exciting twist to add to your normal game.

Bad: The only complaint I have is that the game could have a better presentation. Being based on game boards and dice rolling. You would think more time and effort would go into making better menus, alternate board skins, or even more unlockables. Hopefully they implement some of the examples in the next game released.

Conclusion: Family Game Night is very fun filled night out in casual gaming. It really does a great job of recreating the classic board game experience on the big screen. I would recommend this game to everyone. Even if you’re not too sure, download the trial versions of each game and buy the ones you and your family will enjoy the most.

Family Game Night gets 4 made up Boggle words out of 5.

Dawn's Light: A Christmas Tale

Chinese General Cao Cao's Third Century Tomb Found!?

“China finds likely tomb of 3rd century general

BEIJING – Chinese archaeologists have found what could be the tomb of Cao Cao, a skillful general and ruler in the 3rd century who was later depicted in popular folklore as the archetypal cunning politician.

Archaeological officials say Cao’s 8,000-square feet (740-square meter) tomb complex, with a 130-feet (40-meter) passage leading to an underground chamber, was found in Xigaoxue, a village near the ancient capital of Anyang in central Henan province, according to the official China Daily newspaper.

Historians say Cao Cao’s outstanding military and political talents enabled him to build the strongest and most prosperous state in northern China during the Three Kingdoms period in 208 to 280 A.D., when China had three separate rulers.

Characters based on Cao are depicted as shrewd and unscrupulous villains in traditional Chinese operas and in one of China’s best-loved historical novels, “Romance of The Three Kingdoms.” In the fictionalized account, Cao says, “Better for me to wrong the world than for the world to wrong me.”

The common saying in Chinese “speak of Cao Cao and Cao Cao arrives” is the equivalent of the English expression “speak of the devil.” Cao was also a prolific poet.

From the tomb complex, the bones of three people and more than 250 relics have been unearthed in nearly one year of excavation work, Chinese archaeological officials were quoted as saying. The bones were identified as the remains of a man aged about 60 and two women, one in her 50s and the other between 20 and 25 years.

Experts say the male was Cao, who died at age 65 in 220 A.D., the elder woman his empress, and the younger woman her servant. The report said among the relics found were stone paintings featuring the social life of Cao’s time, stone tablets bearing inscriptions of sacrificial objects, and Cao’s personal belongings.

Tablets carrying the inscription “King Wu of Wei,” Cao’s posthumous title, were seized from people who had apparently stolen them from the tomb, the report said.

“The stone tablets bearing inscriptions of Cao’s posthumous reference are the strongest evidence,” archaeologist Liu Qingzhu, of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, was quoted as saying. “No one would or could have so many relics inscribed with Cao’s posthumous reference in the tomb unless it was Cao’s.”—–”
